Josh’s Note: Please welcome my friend Alex Miller to Unprepared. He’s lived around the country in urban and rural environments and has experience with different levels of backup power. He recently installed a whole-house solar system at his Montana homestead, which he’ll describe for us in a future post.

Modern life runs on electricity. Whether we need it—for heating or essential medical equipment—or just want it—videogames and computers—we’re used to being able to count on power being around. But that’s not always the case, and with a little bit of preparation and some investment, you can make power outages a much easier and less stressful experience.
