When people ask me the first preparedness item they need, I usually surprise them by saying a good first aid kit. They expect me to talk about backpacks or guns, but we all need a first-aid kit at some point in our lives. My kids need one several times per week.
But the first-aid kits you’s find in your local drug store are usually pretty lackluster. You’ll get some basic bandages and ointments, but nothing that’s going to be of much use if things really hit the fan. Thankfully, my friend Tom Rader makes first-aid kits that don’t suck through his company, Medical Points Abroad (MPA).
Tom served as a Navy medic alongside Marine Recon in Afghanistan, and now he’s an instructor with Wilderness Medical Associates International. He’s seen stuff much gnarlier than you’ll hopefully ever seen.
Veteran readers of Unprepared.life may remember that I reviewed MPA’s individual first-aid kit and what was then known as the Big Ass First Aid Kit.
Since then, MPA has partnered with Swiss Military Brands and made things more professional. The Big Ass First Aid Kit is now sold as the more (less?) family friendly WHACK in the Box.
The WHACK in the Box is pretty much anything you’d need outside of a major trauma center, all packaged in a spacious hardshell case. It’s the go-to kit in my house, and then I keep an MPA IFAK in each one of my vehicles.
The WHACK is a pretty pricey kit, but now is the time to make the investment, because from now through December 7th, 2024, you save 15% off by entering code 2024bf15off at checkout. That code applies to anything in the first aid category, like the Bad Day Blowout Kit .
Here’s another tip: If you have an FSA, HSA, or ICHRA, they will reimburse you for your first-aid kits. If you have extra medical funds that have to be spent by the end of the year, this is a great way to invest some of those dollars.
If it’s still out of your budget, you might check out the Everyday First Aid Kit Plus, which has all of the essentials for under $25. On the other end of the spectrum, if you or a loved one spends a lot of time on the road, consider the Vehicle Trauma Kit, which features everything you need to stabilize someone in the event of a roadside medical emergency.
Like I said, I own four of Tom’s kits—one of the WHACK kits and three IFAKs, and other than one IFAK, I paid for the rest with my own money (and the help of an ICHRA account), and I heartily recommend them.
